Ghost of Yōtei Announced: A New Chapter in the Ghost of Tsushima Universe

During today’s Sony State of Play livestream, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2020 hit Ghost of Tsushima. The announcement was accompanied by a thrilling trailer, showcasing the next chapter in the samurai epic.

While Ghost of Tsushima made its way to PC earlier this year, receiving an 81% in our review for being a “thrilling and engaging samurai epic,” Ghost of Yōtei will first launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025. PC gamers should be prepared for a potential wait, as Sucker Punch has not yet confirmed when it will arrive on other platforms.

Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch, explained the studio’s approach to the sequel on the PlayStation Blog: “We wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore, and highlighting the beauty of the world. But we also wanted to continue innovating.” Instead of revisiting Jin Sakai’s story, the team focused on creating a fresh experience centered around the concept of the Ghost, introducing a new protagonist and legend.

The Ghost of Yōtei trailer hints at a major addition: the new hero wields not one but two katanas, signaling enhanced combat mechanics. In an interview with The New York Times, creative director Jason Connell shared that players will also master firearms, further expanding gameplay variety. “We wanted to balance against the repetitive nature of open-world games and deliver unique experiences,” Connell said.

Set in 1603, over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei takes place in the northern region of Japan, near Mount Yōtei. The area is known for its vast grasslands and snowy tundras, offering a stark contrast to the samurai-ruled island of Tsushima. Sucker Punch is keeping the plot under wraps for now, but the new setting promises a fresh and original tale.

As with Ghost of Tsushima, expect Ghost of Yōtei to eventually make its way to PC. Given that Tsushima first launched on PS4 before transitioning to PS5 and PC, we might not have to wait until 2030, but a multi-year delay is likely.

Fans of the original are eagerly awaiting what the new Ghost will bring, both in terms of story and gameplay.
