Helldivers 2 Celebrates Liberty Day with a Nostalgic (and Terrible) New Rifle That Fans Can’t Get Enough Of
In true patriotic style, Liberty Day has come and gone in Helldivers 2, with Arrowhead Game Studios rewarding the Super Earth citizens with a nostalgic addition: the 2124 Constitution rifle and armor set from the original Helldivers. This weapon is a fitting nod to the classic M1903 Springfield, the iconic rifle from World War I, which, in the Helldivers 2 universe, has been the go-to weapon of Super Earth citizens since age 16. Its five-round magazine and bolt-action mechanism make it essentially impractical by futuristic standards, but its unique feature—a bayonet—sets it apart from all other weapons in the game.
Unsurprisingly, the Helldivers community is thrilled. Now they can charge into enemy lines with a bayonet, adding a historical flavor to their battles against robot and alien forces. Fans quickly embraced it with praise like “This is the best weapon ever” and “You can even stab tanks!” The community’s love for weapons that are “so bad they’re good” shines through here; it’s all about the thrill of taking on a tough challenge with intentionally less-effective gear. The Constitution rifle, intentionally made “bad” as a joke, is another example of Arrowhead’s humor, adding that touch of comedic irony in the face of brutal combat.
The developers had teased the idea of a melee weapon back in April, emphasizing a “realistic” approach that still fits Helldivers‘ grounded weaponry. Here, they delivered: a classic bayonet on an antiquated rifle, a nod to an era when hand-to-hand combat still had sway on the battlefield. With its comic impracticality and underwhelming stats, it’s unlikely to be listed among the best weapons in Helldivers 2, but fans have already embraced it for the nostalgia and unique challenge it offers.
Meanwhile, Arrowhead is preparing to take things even further with the Truth Enforcers warbond set. Soon, players will get their hands on new weapons and gear under Super Earth’s Ministry of Truth, going full “baddies” with the jackbooted enforcers. It’s the latest chapter in Helldivers 2’s wild universe, where the laughs come as readily as the explosions.
