No Man’s Sky Achieves “Very Positive” Rating on Steam After Eight Years
No Man’s Sky has finally reached a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, marking a major milestone for Hello Games and their epic journey of redemption. The rating reflects over eight years of tireless work and countless updates, transforming what was once a contentious launch into one of gaming’s most inspiring comeback stories. Despite this achievement, the developers at Hello Games have no intention of slowing down.
“Our tiny team at Hello Games has grafted and then grafted some more,” said Martin Griffiths, engineer programmer at Hello Games. “Although ‘very positive’ might be just a few words, it means an awful lot—especially since we aren’t even close to being finished yet. Thank you to all players who believed in us and those of you who continue to journey with us.”
Resilience Fueled the Journey
Griffiths credits his upbringing in South Wales and the resilience instilled by his parents for helping him and the team navigate No Man’s Sky’s rocky start.
“Shortly after the initial release of No Man’s Sky, I had a meeting with Sean [Murray, Hello Games’ founder] in a pub in Guildford,” Griffiths recalls. “Everything he said during that lunch echoed what I had been taught as a child: to try and try again if you initially fail.”
A Legacy of Updates
Since its rocky 2016 launch, No Man’s Sky has evolved significantly, thanks to a relentless series of free updates. Hello Games introduced multiplayer, expansive new quests, underwater exploration, VR compatibility, base building, and even fishing. These updates have delivered on early promises and gone far beyond, solidifying No Man’s Sky as a long-term staple in the gaming community.
This dedication has earned No Man’s Sky widespread recognition, including PC Gamer’s Ongoing Game Award in 2017 and a nomination for Best Community Support at The Game Awards 2023, where it competed alongside titles like Baldur’s Gate 3.
What’s Next?
Eight years of hard work have already paid off, but Hello Games is far from done. “The ‘Very Positive’ rating is an important milestone, but it doesn’t mark the end,” Griffiths teased. Fans can expect more updates in the future as the studio continues to push the boundaries of its ambitious space exploration game.
No Man’s Sky stands as a testament to perseverance, creativity, and a commitment to players, showing what’s possible when a studio refuses to give up. For Hello Games and their fans, the journey is far from over.
