Sega Hints at ‘Elite’ Developer Team for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Sega has unveiled Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, an upcoming kart racer scheduled for release in 2025. The announcement, made at The Game Awards 2024, has sparked significant speculation among fans regarding its developers and gameplay features.
The teaser trailer featured Shadow the Hedgehog speeding through a city and entering a dimensional portal via a Warp Ring, but no gameplay was shown. Sega describes the development team as an “elite group of racing game veterans,” leading fans to theorize the involvement of Japanese studios like Sega AM2, known for classics such as OutRun, Daytona USA, and Sega Rally.
While initial guesses included studios like Sega HARDlight and Sumo Digital (developer of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed), their non-involvement has been hinted at by recent announcements and tweets. This has bolstered the theory that a Japanese-based team with racing expertise may be spearheading the project.
Excitement is growing over possible gameplay elements. Sega has teased cross-dimensional racing across “land, sea, air, space, and time,” fueling comparisons to All-Stars Racing Transformed. Some fans even believe the game could include elements from the Sonic Riders series, citing a glimpse of Sonic’s Extreme Gear-inspired sunglasses in the teaser.
With a 2025 release window and little confirmed information, fans are eagerly awaiting further updates about the developers and features of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
